One of the Stars of the day; Bar Tailed Godwit (male)
more photos below
Stansted Airport Lagoons:
A dash around a few local hotspots with Rick... a great day out
- BAR-TAILED GODWIT 2 - This pair was the my best sighting of the month, don't get me wrong, Osprey's a cracker (east along thames at Rainham) but a new species on my local list wins hands-down. We half-heartedly snuck up to the largest of the lagoons, I had almost already made my mind up they were gone but as soon as we were close enough to see the closest bank we saw them.... just infront of us! With remarkably close views in stunning light we got more than just record shots... I would have been happy with a few distant pixels. One bird was larger, pretty brown, a MASSIVE beak and retained Juvenile feathers (terts) showing this to be a 1st Winter female. The male was much greyer, with a shorter beak and a few hints at male summer plumage... no retained Juv feathers aged this one as adult. I grew up in the estuary of the river Lossie in Moray but never got views quite like this. Although this pair spent most of the time asleep, they did rouse a few times to feed and at one point decided to walk straight at us... unbeleivable considering they were already almost on our lap! We chatted throughout out viewing... a little noise can be a good thing when the birds alredy know you are there... no fox (or other predator) are likely to alert their prey like this and seems to be a great way of keeping really close birds at ease [i often whistle a tune if on my own] works a treat :-) Cheers Mike for alerting everyone to this super pair.
